Small Groups
What is a Small Group?
Small groups are for the new believer and
mature Christian alike. Led by members of
the congregation, Small Groups offer the
opportunity to come together for mutual
encouragement, prayer, to study God’s Word,
and develop close, personal relationships.
Why have Small Groups?
To extend the love and compassion that many
have already found at The Fountain of Life
Church into several groups; connecting
people and changing lives all around the
city.
Why join a Small Group?
1. To become more
connected to the rest of God’s family.
People who have been a part of a Small Group
say the greatest benefit is the close
relationships and friendships they develop.
You will find that your needs and problems
are not unique. It helps to know that others
are facing the same struggles, or have lived
through them, and can share spiritual
principles learned in the process.
2. To better handle
the pressures and struggles in life.
Small Groups provide support in times of
crisis, change, or stress. Having a base of
committed friends, who know and care about
you, provides security and comfort in times
of need.
3. To better
understand God’s Word.
Have you ever wished you could stop a sermon
or message just long enough to ask a
question? Preaching and teaching are
terrific for one-way communication, but in a
small group setting, you can ask questions,
participate in discussions, and hear others
share insights and illustrations. God’s Word
is easily applied to your own personal
situation in a small-group setting.
4. Prayer will
become more meaningful.
You may be someone who feels reluctant to
pray in front of others, especially in a
church setting. In a small group, no one is
pressured to pray. As you become comfortable
with the members of your group, you will
experience a genuine desire to pray for
others, as they pray for you. God’s Word
promises that there is great power in prayer
when “two or more are gathered” in His name.
5. To develop
leadership skills you never knew you had!
Every Christian is a potential leader. The
Bible teaches that every believer is given
certain talents or “gifts” to benefit others
in the family of God. As you share and
participate in a relaxed small-group
setting, you will discover your confidence
and self-esteem rising. This new
understanding of your gifts will help you at
work, at church, and in every other
relationship.
What does the Bible say about Small
Groups?
Jesus ministered to the masses, but He chose
to develop the faith of His closest
disciples in the context of a small group.
The Book of Acts and the Epistles of Paul
often make reference to the early believers
meeting in homes. God’s Word exhorts us to
“love one another,” to “pray for one
another” and to “build up one another.”
Small groups offer an opportunity to better
fulfill this calling as we form close
relationships with each other, pray for one
another’s needs, and ultimately help each
other become mature disciples of Jesus
Christ.
“And they continued steadfastly in the
apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the
breaking of bread, and in prayers... Now all
who believed were together, and had all
things in common... So continuing daily with
one accord in the temple, and breaking bread
from house to house... And the Lord added to
the church daily those who were being
saved.” Acts 2:42-47
